Technical modification of a point of care (POC) testing system for dental diagnostics to other medical applications (09 DE 0855 3EZL)
A German biotech company is developing an apparatus for dentists which can identify and quantify bacteria in oral diseases. The system offers to the dentist the possibility of point of care (POC) diagnosis of periodontal pathogens. It is time-saving and cost-efficient.
The firm now seeks for a partner with whom new applications of the system can be developed.
Country: Germany Type: OFFER Date: 29.08.2011
Background: A German biotech company has developed a powerful real-time PCR testing system for the quantitative detection of periodontal pathogens which sets new standards in microbiological diagnostics in periodontology. The results of the test provide valuable information for an improvement in periodontal and peri-implantary diagnosis and monitoring of treatment.

Presently, the firm works together with a company specialising in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) in an R&D project related to the development of point of care (POC) tests for the dental office. This new system is based on real-time PCR and will allow the rapid (< 1 h) and highly sensitive (< 100 cells) diagnosis of periodontal pathogens directly in the dental office also during the patient's first visit. The advantage of the POC system is evident: the doctors have results of the test available within some minutes and can start with a specific and tailor-made treatment. Patients do not have to visit the surgery for a second time.

Possible diversification of this POC system include, inter alia, rapid and sensitive diagnosis of various viral diseases (e.g. HIV, hepatitis, influenza), hospital infections (e.g. MRSA, Clostridium difficile), and gynaecological infections (e.g. Chlamydia).

Innovative Aspects:
- Point-of-care, real time diagnosis of viral diseases.
- Time-saving, patient-friendly system (one-stop treatment).
- Cost-efficient: no laboratory needed.

Degree of development:
Patents/Rights: Others
Requested Cooperation: Joint further development, Testing of new applications, Adaptation to specific needs
The German biotech firm looks for alliances with strong partners who will support and (co-)finance the development of new POC testing systems which are suitable to complement their respective product spectrum.

The partner should provide profound knowledge concerning the respective medical area. The partner should also have access to suitable sample material for the development and evaluation of the new POC tests.

Potential partners are expected to have an excellent access to the respective future users, e.g. intensive care units, hospitals in general, gynaecologists, general practitioners etc..
