Novel technology to predict iron clogging in water and hydraulic systems (10 DE 1592 3IEG)
A German university has developed a new technology to predict iron clogging in water and hydraulic systems. Iron clogging, a common and natural occurring problem, can cause severe damages to hydraulic systems and drinking water systems. The offered sensor technology is based on electrochemical measurements of ferrous iron activities and can be used as a basis to estimate the potential of ferric hydroxide build-up. The university is searching for licensees.

The accumulation of bulky aggregates of iron precipitates in water is a common and natural occurring problem, particularly in hydraulic systems and wells, causing great damage on the system if this phenomenon has not been taken seriously.
An aid for an effective monitoring is a predictive sensor technology, which continuously measures critical water parameters, giving a clear read-out of the status of the accumulation of iron precipitates. This will prevent an unexpected total clogging of the system and hence is beneficial to keep maintenance costs low. The total clogging of the systems leads to expensive and time-consuming regeneration of the whole system.
Scientists of a university from Germany have developed a novel method to predict iron clogging in water and hydraulic systems. This new sensor technology is based on electrochemical measurements of ferrous iron activities and can be used as a basis to estimate the potential of ferric hydroxide build-up.
Innovative Aspects:
The new developed system offers:
" A predictive and effective sensor technology for iron clogging." The utilisation as robust and mobile sensor system or as easily integrated solution in existing water measurement systems." A continuous measurement of critical water parameter, which permanently informs about the risk of the accumulation of iron precipitates. " Better maintenance planning of the cleaning regime." Less costs: no need of costly regeneration times due to a precise and strategic cleaning scheme." Can be used in all kinds of open or closed water systems due to robust and high range sensitivity.
