Culture medium from dry olive mill residue (10 ES 27F4 3IIJ)
A Spanish Research Centre has developed a new application of a toxic olive oil extraction residue, the dry olive mill residue. From this toxic residue is possible to obtain a culture medium for growing fungus. Making a solid-liquid extraction of the dry olive mill residue is possible to obtain a dissolution that filtered, centrifuged, again filtered and concentrated (40-60% (percent)) can be used for saprobes fungus growth. They are looking for Licensing Agreement.

Olive oil is produced by grinding olives. In last decades extraction techniques have been modified. At this moment the extraction is carried out by means of a system of two phases that allows saving water and energy. But this process generates a toxic subproduct named alpeorujo. From this subproduct is obtained orujo oil and a residue, the dry olive mill residue.
Andalusian researchers have managed to valorise this residue from olive oil industry, converting it in a fungal culture medium with all the nutrients necessary for their growth.
This procedure consists of a solid-liquid extraction using a watery dissolution. The obtained liquid is filtered, centrifuged, filtered again and finally concentrated (40-60%).
The use of this culture medium enables the obtention of 3 times the fungal mass obtained with other culture mediums.
Innovative Aspects:
" It's a simple and cheap form to obtain a culture medium for saprobe fungus" It allows to valorise a toxic subproduct for the olive oil industry" It allows to obtain high fungus mass compared with classic culture mediums
