There is a growing need for high brightness digital displays in public access venues such as airports, railway stations and shopping malls. Existing technology solutions such as plasma and LED (light-emitting diode) are widely used but in locations with significant levels of natural/artificial light they often fail to generate the high brightness or resolution/viewability demanded. There are also occasions where unusual shapes non-rectangular displays (such as J and L etc) are called for (see picture).
A UK company offers a professional monitor module for digital signage and video wall applications based on a revolutionary technology. With an existing production line of 34" diagonal modules, the system enables the creation of large colour seamless digital video walls of any format and size. Perhaps more importantly, they deliver displays with unsurpassed image visibility even in direct sunlight, without any reflections. Already on the market, the patented technology uses proprietary optical injection-moulded components to ensure that the image is uniform and high quality across a wide field of view.
Other required elements (e.g. LCD panels, backlight components) are standard items to ensure low production costs. The available modules have a small pixel size of 1.7mm which gives XGA resolution (1024x768) in an 85 inch display.
The system is ideal in situations requiring large displays (100" - 200" diagonal) or unusual shapes (long, tall, thin etc), high quality image reproduction with near and far viewing and where there is high ambient lighting. It offers significant benefits over existing technologies - e.g. a much higher level of resolution and at a significantly lower cost.
Innovative Aspects:
The off-the-shelf' technology employs a novel optical system that allows modules to be seamlessly tiled together. Already in production, the technology is an affordable solution that offers high resolution, high brightness colour video displays for the 100-200 inch market with no significant lines, gaps or mullions between modules. The optics give excellent colour images over a wide field of view. The 34" diagonal modules use standard LCD panels and backlight components to give a low cost solution that is ideal for high volume production. Other advantages include:" modular construction (allows a wide range of display sizes, shapes and formats)" Slim profile (<250mm)" large area brightness up to five times greater than a typical plasma screen
Manufactured tiles are available to OEM's for integration into their own displays.
