Dye with a Large Absorption Coefficient for Long Wavelengths (10 US 87GA 3II6)
A large US company is looking for proposals for dyes with a large absorption coefficient for wavelengths of = 600 nm, to be used in dye sensitized solar cells. They are interested in joint development, contract development, licensing and product supply.
Country: United States
Type: REQUEST
Date: 08.09.2010
The company is pursuing research and development into dye sensitized solar cells. Although there has been much research into dye sensitized solar cells, a major challenge with commercialization is that the electric generation efficiency is low. One of the reasons is that the range of wavelength that can be absorbed by the dye sensitized solar cell is narrow.
The company has evaluated various dyes that are reported to have large absorption coefficients for long wavelengths. However they have not found dyes that have adequate performance when used in dye sensitized solar cells. Therefore, the company has issued this technology request in order to accelerate their technology development and time to market.
The company anticipates acquiring the needed technology from organizations that already possess it, or receiving promising development proposals based on joint development or contract development.
Possible approaches:
Anticipated technologies for dyes that have large absorption coefficients for long wavelengths include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:
- Technologies for designing new dyes using simulation, quantum chemistry, etc.
- Technologies that modify the structures of existing dyes, such as ruthenium complexes
- Technologies that use natural dyes, such as those extracted from plants
- Technologies that use materials that convert wavelengths, such as antenna pigments.
Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
Requirements for the dyes are as follows:
" Molecular extinction coefficient: exhibit absorption coefficient = 1 × 104 L/mol·cm for wavelengths = 600 nm " HOMO level: More positive than 0.4V relative to a standard hydrogen electrode " LUMO level: More negative than 0.5V relative to a standard hydrogen electrode " Adsorption onto the electrode: adsorbs onto a titanium dioxide electrode:
- Contains carboxyl groups, sulfonate groups, phosphate groups, etc.
This request especially emphasizes the absorption coefficient requirement. Proposals are welcomed if there is a good prospect for the dye to be used in sensitized solar cell. The company expects to adopt a dye that has the prospect of a = 5% conversion efficiency when used in a dye sensitized solar cell.
Degree of development:
Patents/Rights:
Requested Cooperation: License Agreement, Joint further development, Adaptation to specific needs Responses from companies (large or small, startups, etc.), hospital or academic researchers, contract research institutes, pharmacologists, nutritionists, medicinal chemists, drug formulators, biochemists, physiologists, alternative or traditional medicine providers, etc., from around the world are all welcome.
Following an initial review of responses, the company may ask further qualifying questions in order to select respondents who may become collaborative partners. After such selection, the company will sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) with respondents, seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development approaches.
The company will seek to obtain samples from respondents as necessary in order to perform a detailed evaluation of the technology. Upon verification that the final target performance can be achieved, the company and the respondent will execute a contract development agreement or joint development agreement, and proceed to steps such as proof of concept and development. Licensing or supply agreements are also possible outcomes and should be ready and available.
It is anticipated that verification of applicability with a prototype will require one year. After that, it is anticipated that there will be a period of about three years of development toward commercialization.
