Seeking Anti-static Compounds to Apply to Fibrous Products (10 US 87GA 3IIC)
A large US company is looking for proposals for improved anti-static compounds for use in its line of fibrous products. They are interested in proof of concept leading to scale up to manufacturing and supplier agreement.
Country: United States
Type: REQUEST
Date: 08.09.2010
The company currently uses a quaternary ammonium salt as an anti-static compound. This anti-static compound affects critical product properties when the products are exposed to environments with high ambient relative humidity. The compound is hydrophilic, which may promote adsorption of water from the atmosphere and encourage formation of a tacky layer on fiber surfaces which affects loft of the fiber matrix.
Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:
- Dry, hydrophobic powders
- Natural or synthetic powders.
Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
The successful technology will:
" Suppress static charge build-up in synthetic or inorganic fiber matrices " Be resistant to conditions of varying relative humidity (from 10-90%) and temperature (= 200 °F). Anti-static compound should:
- Not adsorb water from the atmosphere
- Not be hydrophilic
- Not be tacky " Preferably be applicable in sprayable formulation, either waterborne or oil-dispersible
- Company will consider other application strategies for superior anti-static candidates
- Company's manufacturing process naturally provides adequate heat to thoroughly dry materials spray-applied with water " Preferably be neutral in color " Be non-toxic, able to pass internal product stewardship review for use in consumer products " Be cost effective for use in high-volume commodity products.

Requested Cooperation: Absolutely novel process, Testing of new applications Responses from companies (large or small, startups, etc.), hospital or academic researchers, contract research institutes, pharmacologists, nutritionists, medicinal chemists, drug formulators, biochemists, physiologists, alternative or traditional medicine providers, etc., from around the world are all welcome.
ANTICIPATED PROJECT PHASES OR PROJECT PLAN
Phase 1 Proof of concept
Demonstrate that candidate material/s can suppress static in company's fibrous materials and meet company evaluation of product performance across the full range of relative humidity and temperature. Company will provide access to production equipment for manufacture of trial product samples and assistance in conducting trials.
Phase 2 Production Trials
Demonstrate that candidate material/s can deliver static suppression in company material and constant product performance with varying relative humidity, on a consistent basis in a production environment for a period of at least four months. Company will provide access to production equipment and assistance in implementing use of candidate materials.
CRITERIA FOR MOVING FROM PHASE 1 TO PHASE 2
Company will consider for advancement a successful demonstration of static suppression in company's fibrous materials over target range of relative humidity and temperature, acceptable financial analysis, and successful product stewardship review.
