PS- Eurostars - The Blood Quality Detector -a- Non-Invasive Monitor of RBC Quality During Storage (10 TR 98OB 3IE3)
A Turkish SME is looking for partners for a Eurostars Project. The aim of the project is to develop a device called Blood Quality Detector which aims at accurate and non-invasive measurement of selected blood parameters. The partners are expected to have expertise in non-invasive methods (from outside the blood bag) for measurement of blood quality parameters such as NADH, Hct, Morphology and Hemoglobin.

A Turkish SME is preparing a proposal for Eurostars Project. The Blood Quality Detector (BQD), the device which will be developed, aims at accurate and non-invasive measurement of selected blood parameters that reflect erythrocyte viability during routine storage in the blood bank in order to assess the "quality" of the blood used for transfusion. A Blood Viability Index (BVI) will be developed to estimate the viability and condition of the blood with respect to the BQD metric using a multivariable analysis where the variables will be the non-invasive measurements obtained by BQD. The Transfusion Feedback Registry Software aims at following and recording the "acute" consequences of transfusion in blood recipients in order to correlate in vitro findings with in vivo results after transfusion.
The project will be implemented by a team of professionals who have specialized in the field of blood banking procedures and automation, blood safety as well as in non-invasive measurement techniques and biomedical practices.
There are no systems in place that measure any of the parameters that have been shown to be associated with RBC senescence rapidly or routinely during RBC storage. Today blood is measured worldwide only for regulatory or investigative purposes on a sample of blood removed from bags or segments connected to the bag. Therefore the adverse effects that storage time might have had on the individual blood is not known and not taken into consideration. The developed system will provide a real-time coverage that enables each unit of blood to be analyzed for quality indicators anytime during the whole storage period.
