Compact High Performance Automotive Head-Up Display (10 US 87GA 3IFP)
A large US company is looking for proposals for the development and/or supply of compact projection equipment capable of implementing an augmented reality head-up display in the small space available in an automobile. They are interested in development contract, supply agreement for up to 100.000 units/year, technology purchase and license agreement.

Head-up displays have great value in improving the driving experience. Present displays however cannot provide augmented reality overlays of useful directional or safety information because the projection systems needed to provide the viewing angles and perceived distance in front of the vehicle are much larger than the space available to package them. Existing systems with lesser capabilities occupy 4-7 liters. In any automotive system, the less space occupied the better.

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:
- Fiber optics systems
- Defect free MEMs Mirrors (fail black is allowed, fail bright isn't)
- Unconventional optical materials, metamaterials
- Holographic elements
- Other unique approaches.

The following approaches are not of interest:
" Designs whose hardware intrudes within 40 horizontal centimeters of any vehicle occupant " Any optics system that has the potential for ghost images and stray light image contrast below 500:1 " Temperature sensitive LCD devices.

Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
The successful technology will: " Solve competing specification requirements:
- Deliver a viewing angle of at least 15° horizontal, and 7.5° vertical
- Deliver a perceived image at least 10 meters in front of the vehicle
- As a complete system package occupy a total volume substantially less than 7 liters " Cost less than 500¬ at volumes of 100,000 units/year " Display approx. 900 x 450 pixels in RGB " Provide an image brightness for white color exceeding 6000 cd/m2 " Consume less than 10 watts of power " Ultimately meet the stringent requirements for automotive service (temperatures from - 40 to 105 °C, vibration, durability life > 5000 h) and safety, including laser safety.

Responses from small to large companies, academic researchers, other research institutes, consultants, entrepreneurs or inventors are welcome. The technology sought may either be ready for testing and transfer to commercial use or require further development.
