Optical system for solar concentrator technologies (09 IT 53U1 3CJR)
An Italian public research institute, involved in developing photovoltaic concentrator technology, has developed two kind of primary lens and a reflective secondary optical elements able to obtain a point focus concentration up to 300 time the solar power, so that it is possible to use small and very efficient solar cell to generate electrical energy.They are looking for industrial or research partners for technical cooperation and/or commercial/manufacturing/licence agreements.

During the last years, an Italian research team has been involved in photovoltaic concentrator technology developing a whole system including tracker, module and BOS (Balance of System). Within this project, different optical elements, able to concentrate the solar beam, have been developed. In particular, two kind of primary lens, named "Prismatic" and "Hybrid" lens and a reflective secondary optical elements have been created. These components allow to obtain a point focus concentration up to 300 time the solar power with a very uniform energy distribution on the target, so that it is possible to use small, very efficient solar cell to generate electrical energy.
The technology offered consists of optical lens and components to concentrate the solar light.
The "prismatic" lens: it is made of an array of square refractive prisms of size 7,8x7,8 mm2 in the central portion, and 3,9x3,9 mm2 in the peripheral areas. Every square prism deflects, on the squared solar cell, the solar beam incident on its flat surface. In this way a good spot uniformity on the photovoltaic cell has been obtained.
The hybrid lens is made of prismatic refractive prisms in the central portion, and Fresnel grooves in the peripheral region. Both lens are realized in plastic materials (PMMA) by means the injection molding process.
The Secondary Optical Element has the shape of a truncated inverted pyramid with one tilt angle: its inner surface is realized by means of four aluminum sheets used as reflectors; the outer surface is made of plastic material.
We can supply the above mentioned components, or we can carry out also the design for a particular solar collector. These components can be used on a point focus system in order to generate electrical or thermal energy.
Innovative Aspects:
- small cost due to plastic material use;
- possibility of very large mass production using the molding process;
- reduced weight;
- high optical efficiency;
- very uniform energy distribution on the target;
- possibility of using optical components in different module configurations due to their modularity.
Degree of development:
Patents/Rights: Patent(s) granted
Requested Cooperation: License Agreement, Assembly, Technical consultancy, Joint further development, Adaptation to specific needs - Type of partner sought: Industry and research organisations
- Specific area of activity of the partner: solar energy, photovoltaic, solar concentrator technology, polymer and coatings.
- Task to be performed:
We are looking for industrial and research partners interested in photovoltaic concentrator technologies developing:
- Supplying of the developed components: in this case the partner can be an industry interested to use our standard products to manufacture the modules for the electrical generation.
- Design and realisation of solar concentrator systems based on particular specifications: in this case, the partner can be an industry, but also an academy or a research organisation, that are developing themselves a concentrator module for electrical or thermal generation.
- Collaboration for new products developing: in particular we are interested to look a partner with experience in the field of polymers moulding and in realisation of protective coating on plastic (most probably a research organisation)
