Molecular diagnosis of mycotoxigenic fungi in complex matrix (10 IT 55X7 3HIW)
An Italian research laboratory involved in plant pathology and biotechnology has developed technologies to identify molecular and biochemical markers of mycotoxins producing fungi and of medicinal mushrooms. These allow to characterize different pathways involved in the modulation and in the synthesis of mycotoxins and of bioactive compounds. The markers are identified by means of the transcription proteomic and lipidomic profile. It is looking for technical cooperation and financial resources.

The lab has gained a know-how in transcriptional, lipidomic and proteomic profile of mycotoxigenic fungi and of medicinal mushrooms. The use of these holistic techniques lead to the identification of biomarkers for detecting specifically mycotoxigenic fungi in different stage of growth and in every food matrix. This expertise can be used to exploit mycotoxigenic fungi control into every feed and food matrices. Further, the proteome map of the secretome of some medicinal mushrooms such as Trametes versicolor and Lentinula edodes lead to identify some proteins which display anti-microbials ability. These exo-proteins can be added to several feedstuffs and inhibit or delay the growth of several contaminats such as mycotoxigenic fungi.
Innovative Aspects:
The applied technologies allow to identify:
- novel bio-markers for exploiting feed and food safety, i.e. to early detect the presence of mycotoxigenic fungi thus preventing their possible entarnce into the food chain;
- potential advantages: setting up of a rapid and reliable methods for individuating the presence of fungal contaminants in each hazardous point of the entire feed and food chain;
- innovative and alternative compounds, i.e. exo-proteins, from edible mushrooms to inhibit fungal growth and mycotoxin production;
- potential advantages: producing at large scale liquid fermentation high quantity of novel antimicrobials proteins in a very short time (up to 2-3 days).
