A German SME developed a novel low-cost purification technology for chemical and pharmaceutical substances, based on counter current crystallisation.
Purification technologies for chemical substances and pharmaceutical drug substances are mostly based on batch crystallization processes or chromatography. But high product purity in most cases goes along with low yield. To overcome these disadvantages the new purification technology enables a quasi-continuous crystallization process by continuously separating and combining the phases in a counter current process, utilizing the multiplication of separation effects based on the dispersion balance.
In the quasi-continuous crystallization process, the crystallized material and the mother liquor are kept in a counter current process without any external operation. All material transports are made in solution favorably. The solving and crystallization processes are operating in parallel and time-synchronized guaranteeing a high efficiency of the process. Supersaturation during crystallization is adjusted by alternating heat and evaporation phases under vacuum for all crystallizers equally. The produced temperature oscillating profiles encourage the crystal growth in high purity and prevent sticking of substances to heating surfaces. The novel purification technology features excellent reproducibility, successful process validation and quality assurance.
With the multi-step procedure for counter current crystallization, customers can be provided with a cost-effective technology for purification of solid chemical substances and particularly drug substances. Compared to other purification procedures (batch-crystallization or chromatography) the novel technology is distinguished for a significantly higher space-time yield.
