PS - FP7 - Recovery of functional proteins from starch potato fruit juice (10 DK 20B7 3IDC)
A Danish SME producing potato starch and a Danish research institute are jointly preparing a proposal under the FP7 Research for the Benefit of SMEs (CALL: FP7-SME-2011). The aim of the project is to recover functional proteins from by-products of potato starch processing, using membrane separation technology. Partners are sought for the consortium.
Country: Denmark
Type: REQUEST
Date: 23.08.2010
Despite the leading position of European farmers in potato production, starch producers are facing economic challenges due to international competition of starch derived from other origins, such as wheat, corn or tapioca and genetically modified crops from Asia and America. In this scenario, starch producers must search for alternative ways to valorize their products and this is how the idea of recovering added-value compounds from their production residues arose.
The technology which will be investigated to enable this solution is considered an important breakthrough as it does not require any "foreign" chemical compounds.
The protein fractions recovered from the residues can be commercialized targeting several sectors such as cosmetics, food and natural food supplements and even beverages with extremely improved features compared to existing products in the market, namely anti-allergenic properties.
The wish is to develop a research project for the recovery of functional proteins from by-products of potato starch processing, using membrane separation technology. There are different fractions of proteins with specific functions and hence the features of the final products will depend on how well the different fractions are isolated. The method to be developed is considered to be clean, not only in terms of environmental issues but also regarding the labelling of the final product as a natural compound. The technological applications cover areas like protein biochemistry, plant genomics and process separation and purification methods. Similar to the market applications of the end products, the technological advances of the project can be commercialized in the fields of natural ingredients for cosmetics, food and pharmaceuticals. In this particular project, focus will be on the development of native protein fractions for skin products applications and respective correlation between the protein sequence and functionality.
