According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dangerous sexual behaviour is the second major risk for health. Every year more than 100 million new cases of sexually transmitted infections (STI) occur worldwide. The majority of those STI are incurable viral infections causing cancer or facilitating HIV/AIDS (Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) transmission between partners. The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS estimates that today about 33 million people on the world are infected by HIV/AIDS, more than 50% of which being women.
Female condoms available on the market are of uncomfortable use. Consequently, these female condoms are not widely used, leaving women's protection against STI's to the use of a male condom. Unfortunately, different surveys have clearly showed that for various practical and psychosocial reasons the male condom is in most cases not used consistently and/or correctly. An alternative is therefore needed to enable women to protect themselves against STI's.
Thanks to its unique design ensuring a better coverage of the female sexual organs, this new condom provides a higher protection against sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B, Syphilis, Papillomavirus, Herpes and Chancroid.
In addition, this new condom is of very simple use, with or without inner ring according to user's preferences, thus allowing the woman to place it beforehand or alternatively just before intercourse without stopping the impulse of the partners. The woman doesn't need to hold the condom in place during intercourse and there is no risk of penis' misplacing.
Made of latex, this new female condom is comfortable for both partners as it doesn't require extra lubrication and doesn't cause disturbing noises during intercourse, unlike the existing product.
This female condom also answers a major drawback of existing male condoms, i.e. the hampering of man's sensitivity due to penis constriction. It also provides a simple solution for couples facing erectile problems.
Different prototypes have been developed and this new female condom benefits from the active support of health organisations as well as from some renowned medical doctors. Clinical testing still has to be done. The Belgian company is interested in either selling the patent or in licensing agreements.
