Platform for digitizing and exploiting cultural heritage (09 IT 54W2 3EQ8)
An Italian research group has developed a platform for digitizing and exploiting cultural heritage.It includes good practices for digitizing and restoring: the information technology component of the platform enables to preserve, organize, and exploit cultural heritage by means of software advanced technologies, mainly devoted to multimedia contents, and multimodal human-computer interfaces. The team is looking for partners interested in applications and further development of the platform.

Special knowledge and experience about digitizing and exploiting cultural heritage are offered, together with advanced exploitation technologies. The basic elements of the platform are:
- good practices for digitizing and restoring paper sheets, magnetic tapes, photos, films, and any kind of audio media;
- good practices for modeling cultural heritage database (both relational & object-relational);
- algorithms and tools for the automatic recognition and of vocal and music audio contents;
- algorithms and tools for the automatic indexing and of vocal and music audio, images, and video contents;
- methods and tools for information technology projects design and development (mostly concerning DBMS(Database Management System), intranet, internet, multimedia, music, new media);
- design and implementation of multimodal human-computer interfaces.
The automatic recognition of multimedia contents is an original feature of the platform, enabling the automatic indexing and retrieval of contents.
Innovative Aspects:
The platform covers the whole life-cycle of cultural heritage, starting from the analysis of the state of preservation, and ending with the exploitation of related digital contents.
It can be applied in any information technology context, with any kind of databases, operating systems, browsers, and software packages.
It provides the most advanced framework for multimodal multimedia retrieval (for example, it allows the user to search video by the text of the audio track, or to search a music score singing a theme). Similar results can be reached by hand, but the automatic tools of the platform increases productivity of at least 100 times, and even 1 000 times, depending on the kind of digital content considered.
