Low Cost Drawing Display (10 US 87GA 3IDW)
A large US company is looking for low cost display technologies that can facilitate no or low mess drawing or painting. They are interested in product development agreement, research agreement, product acquisition agreement, license, manufacturing or supply agreement.
Country: United States Type: REQUEST Date: 25.08.2010
Displays that allow users to draw or paint without consuming media have been used for over a generation to foster creativity. There are many products currently available, such as magnetic drawing screens. These all employ approaches that do not consume media. Examples include products such as: Aquadoodle, Etch-a-Sketch, Magic Slate, Felt Boards, Leapster, Magnadoodle, Lite-Brite, Microsoft Touch, IPad, Kindle, Low-Cost Projectors and Museum Displays. There are also display formats available in everyday settings, such as condensation or frost on a window.
The company seeks to identify and develop new low cost drawing and painting display technology that facilitates drawing, painting and visual creativity. Because the end application is production of a mass consumer good, cost is a very important factor. A number of innovative methods are available to generate the desired functionality (TFT, PLASMA, LCD,), but they generally fail to meet the demanding cost constraints.

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:
- Mechanical (analog)
- Electronic (digital)
- State-Change/Transforming technologies
- Low-Cost, innovative, magnetic or electro-static solutions not currently used in products for 3-5 year olds.
- Electro-mechanical (contained and safe)
- Electro-chemical (contained and safe)
- Nanotechnology
- Capacitive touch sensors, innovative input technologies.
- Analog, reconfigurable mechanical elements that meet physical, safety and cost requirements.

The following approaches are not of interest:
- Approaches that cost more than $0.15 per square inch for displays larger than 3x3 inches
- Approaches that do not have a clear path towards commercialization
- Approaches known to be currently used in products for 3-5 year olds.

Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
The successful technology will:
" Cost less than
- $0.10 /in2 for displays up to 4x6 inches
- $0.03 /in2 for displays up to 8.5x11 inches
- $0.015 /in2 for displays up to 20x20 inches " Allow input through finger, stylus, or other controller " Have a minimum resolution of 80x80 pixels " Be easy and/or intuitive to use " Be visible/usable in ambient light " Require no external power source, or be battery powered (AA, AAA, C, or D) " Be suitable for use in a portable product " Weigh up to:
- 5lbs for 20x20 inch display
- 3lbs for 8.5x11 inch display
- 1.5lbs for 3x3 inch display " Not contain hazardous materials " Retain image for at least 2-3 minutes.

Additionally, preferred technologies will:
" Display in color " Permit erasure of selected display areas " Allow images to be permanently saved or transferred " Cost effectively fit into more than one size bracket.

Proposals to significantly reduce the manufacturing costs of current magnetic or hydro-chromic display technologies are also of great interest.

Degree of development:
Patents/Rights:
Requested Cooperation: License Agreement, Adaptation to specific needs
Responses from small to large companies, academic researchers, other research institutes, consultants, entrepreneurs or inventors are welcome. The technology sought may either be ready for testing and transfer to commercial use or require further development.

ANTICIPATED PROJECT PHASES OR PROJECT PLAN
Phase 1 Proof of concept: demonstration of drawing capability on a display at one or all of the specified sizes, initial cost estimates.
Phase 2 Device development: refinement of technology, design and development of complete device, additional cost analysis.
Phase 3 Commercialization: device fine-tuning, technology transfer to manufacturing
CRITERIA FOR MOVING FROM PHASE 1 TO PHASE 2
Successful demonstration of drawing on a display and a well-supported cost analysis.
