A German research and development institute has developed a system to compare footprints found on crime scenes with pre-registered tread samples.

Footprints are one of the most frequent and significant clues found on crime scenes, and they are consequently of the utmost importance for the initial stages of an investigation. The retrieval system consists of two components: a core and a shell. The core contains all procedures and data which are the same to every user. The shell includes user interface, administration, case-specific data which are varying between different users.

This internet/network capable software offers additionally several time-saving functionalities, such as different image processing functions (overlaps, image enhancements, etc.), new ways of combining footprints and tread samples, an internal news system, numerous access control schemes, etc.

Innovative Aspects:
This product addresses two of the main demands of users in this particular domain, that is to say:
- the request of data-base networking,
- the parallel access from different locations.

Consequently, it:
- offers independent JAVA-based platforms, which can be automatically kept up-to-date via the network tool.
- allows the setting of several profiles on the same platform - with different access, identification and authorization levels.
- can be set up in order to perform administrative tasks.
